Learn how to make printmaking ink from scratch using natural dyes and use those inks to create one-of-a-kind prints. Students will use stencils and stamps to create a natural dye monoprint on paper, working with a palette of color made possible by materials foraged and grown. The resulting work is entirely biodegradable, place-based, and beautiful!

Using earth-based materials to create artwork can be a powerful way to connect with your bioregion, thread together artmaking with earth revereance, and orient to artmaking in a process-based way. It was only recently that the creation of the materials used to make art was separated from the artmaking process. This class is designed to re-incorporate materials making into an artmaking practice. It is a buffet of different ways art materials can be made from materials sourced from nature as well as reclaimed from waste. It is part discussion on how to shift thinking towards DIY materials, part creating DIY materials on the spot. We will create nature-made drawing and painting supplies together, and then create small works on handmade paper.

This two-part workshop will introduce students to the fundamentals of screenprinting. This class is taught in a way that makes it practical to replicate in a variety of settings. You’ll learn the history of the process, the materials needed, how to expose screens, and practice different techniques that can be used to create art to burn onto your screens, and, of course, print!
